What is the PERT?The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is a computer adaptive test used by the state of Florida to determine whether a student is prepared for college-level coursework. A student who does not meet the minimum required score set by the state needs more academic preparation. The high school is then required to provide postsecondary preparatory instruction.
Who takes the PERT?All students enrolled in public high school in the state of Florida are required to take the PERT in the eleventh grade.
How do I register for the PERT?High school students typically take the test at their current high school, but they can also take the PERT at the postsecondary school they plan on attending.
How many questions are on the PERT?The PERT has three sections with 30 questions each, for a total of 90 questions.
How long is the PERT?The PERT is not timed.
What’s on the PERT?The PERT tests students’ abilities in math, reading, and writing, and directly tests for competence in intermediate algebra and freshman-level composition.
The PERT math section covers algebraic equations, linear and quadratic equations, application of standard algorithms, polynomials, and use of coordinate planes.
The PERT reading section covers critical reading, meaning of passages, author’s intent, the difference between fact and opinion, and key ideas.
The PERT writing section covers grammar, sentence structure, synthesis of information, organizational and structural concepts, and word choice and syntax.
Can I use a calculator on the PERT?An onscreen calculator will pop up for questions that require it.
How is the PERT administered?The PERT is a computer adaptive test (CAT), meaning the test is administered electronically and questions are chosen based on answers to previous questions.
How is the PERT scored?The PERT is scored by section in a range of 50 – 150, with “cut scores” throughout (so students will get three different scores). There are three or four tiers (depending on the section) of cut scores to determine what level students are currently at.
What score do you need to pass the PERT?You cannot pass or fail the PERT. It is used to ensure that students are placed in the most appropriate classes and to determine the best academic path toward college for students.
When will I receive my PERT score?Results are available immediately at the end of the test.
Can I retake the PERT?Students can retake the PERT exam, but the number of testing attempts allowed is up to individual school boards and postsecondary institutions.
