The HESI Admission Assessment (HESI A2) exam is a part of the admissions process for nursing and allied health programs around the country. Schools use the test to assess applicants’ capabilities in high-school level reading, writing, math, and science.

Do I need to take the HESI A2?

If you want to gain admission to the nursing program of your choice, a large number of organizations require you to submit your HESI A2 scores.

Prometric sites offer HESI testing at locations throughout the United States. Check with the school where you will take the test to confirm its registration process.

What’s on the HESI A2?

The HESI A2 consists of an academic portion and a personality portion. Eight subtests make up the academic portion of the exam: math, reading, vocabulary, grammar, biology, physics, anatomy and physiology and chemistry. The personality portion is an unscored section made up of learner profile exams. These exams will not be used as part of your score, but are designed to help students better understand their strengths and weaknesses, learning styles and habits, and other personality traits.

How long is the HESI A2 exam?

Here is a breakdown of the eight subtests’ number of questions and recommended allotted time:

Mathematics: 55 questions, 50 minutes
Reading: 55 questions, 60 minutes
Vocabulary: 55 questions, 50 minutes
Grammar: 55 questions, 50 minutes
Biology: 30 questions, 25 minutes
Chemistry: 30 questions, 25 minutes
Anatomy and Physiology: 30 questions, 25 minutes
Physics: 30 questions, 25 minutes

This works out to about 5 hours and 10 minutes total to complete all 340 questions on the HESI A2 exam. Most candidates take about four hours to complete the HESI A2. Some programs allow candidates more time, depending on the required tests, or do not impose a time limit at all.

What part of the HESI A2 exam should I complete first?

You can work through the sections on the HESI A2 in any order, so you should plan in advance how you’d like to tackle the test. Some students like to start with the section they find the hardest, while others like to focus their efforts on sections they know they’ll do well on. Time limits are recommendations by the administrators of the HESI A2 exam. You do not need to strictly adhere to these suggestions, but these limits may be helpful as you practice pacing yourself for other board certification exams.

How is the HESI A2 administered?

The HESI A2 is an eight-section, computer-based exam. Different schools will require different sections as part of their applications, so you’ll want to make sure you know what sections you need to take on test day.

What are HESI A2 learner profile exams?

You may also encounter other unscored sections on the HESI A2 called learner profile exams. These exams will not be used as part of your score. Instead, they are designed to help students better understand their strengths and weaknesses, learning styles and habits, and other personality traits.

How is the HESI A2 scored?

The HESI A2 is scored on a percentage system, where the highest score possible is 100%. Exam results contain a percentage score for each of the subtests taken as well as a cumulative score, which is the average score of all the subtests.

Where can I view my HESI A2 score?

You should be able to view your score after your exam at the testing center. Within 24 hours to two weeks, your score will also be sent to your Evolve Student Access account. You can access it at the test manufacturer’s site.

What is a good HESI A2 score?

Although it depends from institution to institution, anything at 850 or above is considered acceptable by most programs.

Can you fail the HESI A2 exam?

You cannot “pass” or “fail” the HESI A2. Your score is simply indicative of your current level of comprehension. However, each school has its own entrance requirements, so check the requirements of the institutions that you want to attend. Also, each institution has different requirements regarding the sections of the test you will take; make sure to check that you’re taking the proper exam before you spend your time studying for a subject that you won’t necessarily need.
