AFOQT

The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test is a multiple choice test that measures subjects' verbal and quantitative abilities as a measure to determine overall officer potential.

The AFOQT is required to become an Air Force Officer.

Your officer recruiter will determine your initial eligibility to apply for officer schooling or to join the Air Force as an officer and schedule you for the AFOQT.

Only high school students applying for attendance in the US Air Force Military Academy, college students enrolled in their university ROTC program, and college graduates with bachelor’s degrees are considered eligible to take the AFOQT.

The AFOQT is a multiple choice test which consists of 12 subtests; Verbal Analogies, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Math Knowledge, Instrument Comprehension, Block Counting, Table Reading, Aviation Information, General Science, Rotated Blocks, Hidden Figures, and Self-Description Inventory.

You will need to visit the official Air Force website to locate a recruiter in your area. Your recruiter will determine if you meet the requirements to take the AFOQT. If so, they will then assist you with registering for the test.

The AFOQT has 530 multiple choice questions and takes a total of 3 hours and 31 minutes to complete.

To become an Air Force officer in any non aviation position, you must score at least 15 in this subtest.

To become an Air Force officer in any non aviation position, you must score at least 10 in this subtest.

There is no minimum score in this category to be eligible to become an Air Force officer.

Candidates applying to become a pilot must score a minimum of 25 in this category. Candidates applying to become a CSO must score a minimum of 10 in this category. This category is not considered if applying to a non aviation training course.

Although the minimum Pilot and CSO composite scores for pilot and other aviation training course candidates are 25 and 10, respectively, candidates must attain a combined total composite score of 50 from the Pilot and CSO categories.

Situational Judgment: There is no minimum score in this category to be eligible to become an Air Force officer.

Although there is no minimum score for certain composite categories, the Air Force balances recruitment quotas by selecting candidates who attain the highest scores on the AFOQT.

You will be given scores in five areas: Pilot, Navigator, Academic Aptitude, Verbal, and Quantitative. Each section has a different minimum score. In all five cases, the scores are percentiles, which range from 1 – 99. An average score would fall in the upper 40s. Scores in the 85 – 95 range are considered strong scores.

You should typically be able to check your score within 8-10 days of taking the exam. You can also call the Air Force Personnel Center at 1-800-525-0102 to request your results.

While you cannot technically fail the AFOQT, you may fail to qualify for any positions if you do not meet the minimum score requirements.

The AFOQT may be taken twice in your lifetime. The retake exam must be taken after 180 days from the date of the initial exam. The most recent AFOQT score is used, not the highest score between the two exams. The AFOQT score is valid for life; however, the Air Force has a maximum age requirement at time of commissioning.
