The ACCUPLACER is a collection of multiple-choice tests used to determine student readiness for college.

Do I need to take the Accuplacer?

The ACCUPLACER is not an entrance test, but it will help you and your academic advisors choose which classes are right for you as you get ready for academic work at the university level. Not every student takes all ten tests; check with your college and advisors to determine your requirements.

How do I schedule an Accuplacer test?

Students must directly contact their college counseling office in order to arrange to take the ACCUPLACER. Your institution’s test center will provide information about accommodation for disabilities, required identification or materials, and any options for taking the test remotely.

What is the Next Generation Accuplacer?

In 2016, the College Board updated the Accuplacer. Currently, most schools use the Next-Generation Accuplacer placement tests. This version added in some questions, features paired passages in the Reading Placement Test, and focuses more on organization and development in the Writing Placement Test.

What’s on the Accuplacer?

The ACCUPLACER assesses basic reading comprehension, writing, and arithmetic skills. Students who answer basic questions correctly will encounter more difficult ones: college-level mathematics including algebra, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry, and college-level grammar and reading skills questions.

How long is the Accuplacer?

The ACCUPLACER reading and math tests are un-timed. The writing test is a 50 minute timed test.

How is the Accuplacer administered?

The ACCUPLACER is a multiple-choice test administered by computer. The ESL – Listening section may be administered as a conversation.

Is the Accuplacer hard?

The Accuplacer is computer adaptive: it is administered by computer, and a student’s response to one question determines the difficulty level of the next. If you answer a question incorrectly, the next question will be easier; if you answer a question correctly, you will then be presented with one of higher difficulty.

Can I use a calculator on the Accuplacer math?

You are not allowed to use dictionaries, calculators, notebooks, or textbooks of any kind on the test. Some math questions will permit you to use a calculator. A calculator will appear onscreen, and you may not bring your own calculator to the exam.

How do I check my Accuplacer score?

You will receive your results immediately after taking the test. You may also access your score report via email or through the College Board Accuplacer student portal.

Can I fail the Accuplacer test?

The ACCUPLACER is a diagnostic test; it is not scored, and there is no way to pass or fail it. A higher score on the Accuplacer may mean you get credit for certain college classes; a lower score may mean you must take certain college classes.

What’s a good score on the Accuplacer?

The Reading Placement Test, Writing Placement Test, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics Placement Test, and Advanced Algebra and Functions Placement Test all have score ranges from 200 – 300. These score ranges are scaled scores. The College Board offers a breakdown of your score range that supplies information about your academic skills in these subjects.

The WritePlacer is scored from 1 – 8. The ESL tests are scored from 20 – 120.
